I have just returned from my parents house in Rutshuru where I went to see how my mother was doing after yesterday’s attack on our home.
This is the window to our house that was broken by the armed robbers. You can see we have added a piece of plywood where the glass once was. The robbers broke the glass to force their way in and told my parents and my sisters that if they made any noise they would be killed.
Fortunately she is now out of the hospital, and she received treatment to a knife wound in her head. It was actually the bayonet - that’s the knife at the end of a gun - that was forced into her head.
I am the oldest of 9 children. I have 1 brother and 7 sisters, and 5 of my sisters still live at home.
So it is important for me to support my family at this difficult time.
Antoinette, my mother - born in 1946
To answer your questions, we do not know who it was who attacked us, but at least 5 men came into the house to rob, and there were many others outside robbing neighboring houses. Up until now the police has not done anything. Remember we are in such a moment of insecurity that these crimes often go unpunished.

Innocent, it’s good to hear your mother’s home and recovering, what a horrible situation this must be, my thoughts are with you and with your family, and the hope that this never happens again, please be safe.
without the bandage, Innoncent, you have a very beautiful mom. It is in my capacity as painter that I find his face very expressive and full of light. I hope that its cure will be fast. All my wishes
It’s good to know that your mother is recovering and that you were able to visit, Innocent. You’re a very good son for taking such care of your family. I agree with jean-claude. Your mother is very beautiful. Please stay safe and know that you and your family are always in my prayers.
Thank you all for your support and kindness. My mother will recover I am sure. Thank you Robert for the $100 you sent for my family. I will be going back up to Rutshuru tomorrow so I will give it to my father to buy anything they need to get themselves set up at home once again for my sisters.
Hi Innocent, pole sana, I’m so sorry to hear about your mother. The news here has been focusing on the tragedies facing people and I’ve been thinking about you, Diddy, Paulin, Augustine, and all the other rangers and hoping that you are all safe. We don’ t hear much from you both on the blogs, so I was looking forward to reading your post, but now I’m sad that your mother was injured. I can’t believe that the situation in Eastern Congo is just not getting better. I wish we had a solution.
I’m glad that she’s recovering, Innocent, you have a beautiful family.
Innocent thanks for the information..I hope your mom will recover ok…….only people with no heart could do this to a woman of her age……….this entire world is just so up in arms right now! And now more bad news today about Virunga Park! I am saddened to hear this today!
You are most welcome, Innocent. I hope your mother is recovering OK. Be careful going back to Rutshuru!
it was my love of mountain gorrilas that lead me to this site. May God protect you and your families and keep them safe and bless you for the work that you do with keeping the animals sacred and protected. Prayers are with you.
