The 9th case of cholera has just been found at the Ranger Refugee camp in Goma that is now home to almost 900 displaced Rangers and their families. Just a few days ago there were 670 people there, so the number is growing as we imagined. Emmanuel told me that the camp has not had water in 2 days due to the insecurity and this of course is a massive problem.
So Emmanuel and Maitre Mathieu - the lawyer who works with ICCN that we have blogged about (for eg he is leading the judicial process against those accused of the July 2007 massacre) spoke to the Pallotin Mission and Father Thaddee about 1km from the camp. Father Thaddee agreed to provide water to our displaced Rangers and their families that is already purified. That is good news.
Emmanuel and Maitre Mathieu happened to be together because 2 Rangers were arrested in Goma this morning by some police who appear to be acting alone. Bottom line is the police wanted to steal their cell phones, so Emmanuel and Maitre Mathieu got them out.
THANK YOU for all the donations at this extremely critical time. I am in Gisenyi just over the border in Rwanda, having left yesterday afternoon.

Good to hear from you Sam. The barometer looks great! Hope that goes up fast.
Sam - good to hear from you. The humanitarian aspects are all over the news here. Let me know if I can assist with any advice or contacts for the water situation though I’m sure you know more on the ground. Keep safe.
Yes, finally we’re getting news about this in the MSM. I’m getting pro-Nkunda comments to my blog, too, and none of them seem to have legitimate e-mail addys. Without that, you don’t get posted to my blog and you get spammed for calling me a “baby-killer” for not supporting Nkunda.

Dear All,
Just to say that I have been following events with horror and utter admiration for you all. I am keeping you all in my thoughts and hope for better times, asap. I have written to my MP and to my MEPS (see below) and have circulated a link to your blog and asked for donations.
Thank you for your courage and dedication. Wishing you all security and peace.
With every good wish.

Copy of message sent to MEPS and MP:
I am horrified by the humanitarian disaster unfolding in the eastern Congo, and its many implications. I believe that it is imperative that the EU do every thing possible to improve the situation. As well as despatching as much humanitarian aid as possible, I believe EU troops must be sent immediately to amplify UN troops. Their remit must be to ensure security for the civilan population, as well as to help with the distribution of humanitarian aid. Additionally, pressure must be brought on President Kabila and General Nkunda to find a negotiated settlement.
Please do every thing you can to achieve these aims. Thank you,
Yours sincerely,
Hilary R.H. Wendt

Hey Sam, Good to hear from you. I’m happy you are safe. Thanks for updating us on the condition/status of the Rangers. I’m working on getting a full time job, so I can donate more $$$ for the Rangers, their families and the gorillas. I’ve written my reps here in the US and have been too busy to see any news coverage on the tube. I’m getting all my news regarding the situation from this site and news sites on the internet, which seems to be significant coverage. I’m trying to spread the word to my friends and networks on facebook. My thoughts are with all of you, the Rangers and their families and never far from my thoughts, the gorillas that we haven’t seen in over 1 year. I hope you all remain safe and healthy and that this trauma ends soon. Lisa
I am impressed at the effectiveness of your staff and especially Emmanuel who must never sleep for the leadership he provides. Come to think of it, all of you must be going without sleep. Thanks for the update. The news outlets in the USA are beginning to cover the situation. The Washington had a front page story on it and the news radio channels were all over the story. Lets hope the increased media interest translates into increased humanitarian activity on the ground.
Hang in there and good luck.
