After all the rumor and gossip it turned out to be a quiet night in Goma and not a shot was heard, at least from where I live. There are lots of reports on the local radio stations about the violence up in Kiwanja, about 75km north of here. Displaced people are still heading for Goma in the thousands.
Diddy has just heard from Justine, his wife. She managed to find a motorbike driver willing to take the 4 youngest kids to Nyamilima so they are now safe and sound. Now she and the 2 eldest daughters will continue the walk to rejoin the others. Apparently it is pouring and they don’t have any food so it is still desperate, but Diddy is relieved that the family are gradually inching toward safety.
We will keep you posted.

This must be such a relief for Diddy. I trust that they will all be reunited soon. My thoughts are with you all always and as always I wish I could be of more practical help.
Thank you Samantha for the update on Diddy’s family. Glad to know that he has heard from them and the younger kids are some place safe. There’s something about seperating from your kids during a time of crises, that I’m sure adds another layer of stress, but at least he knows they are safe. Hopefuly Justine and the older girls make it soon. I wish I could pluck them out of that situation RIGHT NOW! Walking in the rain with no food or water. It just makes me so mad to know that they are going through this. Any news on Innocent’s parents? I can’t do much in the way of donations at the moment. I’m trying to secure a steady full time position at Children’s Hospital here in Los Angeles, and when I get it, you guys will be getting a regular monthly donation from me. If I get this position at CHLA, I will be working in the foundation department, so I will be learning alot about fundraising. I hope this will help me in my attempt to help you guys. In the mean time, I’m spreading the work on facebook. I’m in the process of creating my own blog to write about saving Virunga National Park and the Mountain Gorilla, as well as the humanitarian crises going on in DRC. You guys are all an inspiration. Keep up the good work. Lisa
Thank God it looks like Diddy’s family will be safe. What a strong woman Justine is! The women who stay home, while their husbands are out trying to protect the animals, make such a huge sacrifice. We must never forget their sacrifice and courage. It is hard to imagine what it must be like to one day have your home and everything you own gone, and have nothing left but the clothes on your back, and having to run for your life, and the lives of your children. I am praying that Innocent’s parents will be safe also.
Since this new violence has occurred, I find myself awakening during the night, and getting up to turn on the computer to see if there is any news. It is amazing how it is possible to care so much about people you have never met, but through blogs and pictures, feel that they are close friends.
Stay strong, my prayers are with all of you.
