Yesterday we moved the Rangers and families from our camp in Goma to a new location in Bulengo to the west. It is a large camp managed by the UNHCR and the families will be integrated with thousands of other people displaced by the last month’s hostilities.
The UNHCR and other humantiarian agencies who work at Bulengo are much more experienced than us and we are confident that the Rangers will receive all that they need until the time comes when they can go home.

As you can see from the map below, the Bulengo camp is actually very close to the border of Virunga National Park:

Before they left, the families received 3000 sticks to construct their new homes and 52 steres of fuelwood to cook with. This was provided by Bruno from WWF and was sourced from growers he works with on his EcoMakala project. WWF is also providing 300 energy efficient stoves for them to cook with.

It makes me feel better to know the group in Goma will join those being managed by the UN agency. The experience and assistance from the UN hopefully will ease the way and hopefully alleviate some of the worries of the families. God knows they have enough worries as it is. My gratitude to Bruno and the WWF for their support. You all remain in our prayers.
Being in a UN camp gives them some expectation of protection from the UN forces there. That must be a big relief.
The UN has a lot of problems, but it is amazing how quickly it, and the NGO community in general, can mobilize and get people on the ground.
Thanks for the update.
