Mapima & Faustin have now been together for 5 days.
He had this crate made for her for when she travels to Lubumbashi and J.A.C.K. He is getting her used to it.
They hang out together day and night. Mapima has not left Faustin’s side since she was seized.
They play, and rest, and play and rest. Mapima takes 2 siestas a day - 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon.
And drinks FOUR bottles a day! Faustin thinks the deparasite medicine will soon start to work.
Apart from regularly chewing on Faustin’s finger she also eats oranges, mango, avocado, passion fruit and banana. The bond that Faustin has developed with Mapima is extraordinary.
And Faustin only hangs her upside down when he knows she has digested!
We hope Mapima and Faustin will travel to J.A.C.K. next Tuesday.

Absolutely delightful! Thanks for the update.
Thank you, Sam, for these pictures of Faustin and Mapima. She looks happy, which is remarkable considering the horrors she’s experienced. Faustin is remarkable. I am so impressed by his ability to connect with these young chimps. I hope everything goes smoothly for the trip to J.A.C.K. and I can’t wait for Roxane’s future reports on Mapima’s progress.
Thanks everyone.

I echo Sheryls words. Mapima looks so content, even happy & so trusting of Faustin. They can sense good people.
Very best to Mapima. Don’t envy Faustin having to leave another at JACK, albeit a wonderful place for Mapima.
Thanks for the heart-warming pix!!! I laughed out loud at some of them. When Mapima gets to JACK, does that mean she’ll be separated from Faustin??? Oh,NO! Somebody plz tell me.
Ah Faustin, how I admire and envy you! You have such a natural knack for making these poor, traumatized babies feel loved and secure again. Mapima is gorgeous and is clearly thriving under your wonderful care!
MinouNYC: Faustin will stay with Mapima for several days at J.A.C.K., until she’s comfortable and secure. Then she’ll spend some time getting to know the other chimps in her age group, most likely Tongo and Jane. It’s a wonderful place for her to grow and interact with other chimps and live peacefully.

Thank you, Samantha, for this lovely report amidst the chaos. I’m so happy to see the two of them together — what joy! May both of their transitions be effortless.
Emmanuel, I just read this story:
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/world/stories/DN-congotot_16int.ART.State.Edition1.4a48070.html
I want to know, what will happen to a little boy like this? Who will care for him? The article says “there are no orphanages to take him in.” What might become of him? Is there anyway I can help him? This is just too sad for me to take. I’m haunted by this little boys story and worried about what will happen to him with nobody to look out for him. It’s just not fair! Damn it! Lisa
Sorry for this second post, but I did want to say that little Mapima is just precious and seeing how Faustin plays with her is very touching. Just look at that smile in the last picture, where he is holding her upside down. It doesn’t get in better than that - I take that back, I guess it would be better than that, if she could be back with her own family group living wild and free. I guess we’re all just doing the best we can. I wish that damn fighting would stop and allow some peace to prevail for all in DRC. Lisa
Faustin, you are an angel!! These babies bond with you because they can feel your good heart. They are naturally drawn to you knowing they we will be safe and loved. What a wonderful thing for these poor traumatized babies. Mapima looks so relaxed and happy which is heartwarming to see.
My wish is to have no more orphan babies at all but we know that is not realistic. If we must have orphans at least we have you who will help them to start healing from their ordeals. You truly are an angel Faustin and you have my gratitude for the care of love you give these babies.
Sheryl you are exactly right. Faustin will travel with Mapima to J.A.C.K. She will also have to do quarantine, like Tongo is doing with Jane (he should be near the end) at the moment. Roxane did actually tell me that another little chimp has been seized, of similar age to Mapima, so they can do quarantine together and keep each other company before being incorporated into the bigger group.
Hi Sam, that is so good they will keep each others company. Thanks for those pictures, Mapima is absolutely gorgeous!
Words cannot express how I feel looking at these heartwarming pics of Faustin (an angel) and Mapima ( she is gorgeous). God bless you all for the care and love you give these orphans. I was so worried when I read about Mapima at the weekend. May peace prevail very soon in DRC for everyone.
What charming pictures of Faustin and Mapima! I really like the one of Mapima leaning against Faustin’s leg with her hands behind her head in a ‘this is the good life’ attitude…
Thank you for letting us have these good news. The pictures are so sweet and it’s great to know that Mapina is going to have a fresh start in life, thanks to all your amazing efforts to protect and save the wildlife in Congo.
Wonderful!!! Mapima is just pure love, and Faustin surely has to put a lot of energy to amuse and care for her. Faustin, you are a lucky, lucky man. Even tough you live in Africa, with all the known problems, you are so lucky to be in charge of raising and taking care baby Mapima. I’d give all I have to do what you do. But it’s not jealousy, just admiration.
Congratulions for you both!
