After 4 days in the health clinic and several bags of quinine given intra-venously Innocent finally got out of the hospital late yesterday to go home to his wife Aline and 6 children. He will have to rest another week at home before heading back to the Gorilla Sector as he has lost some weight and it takes a while to regain your strength after both malaria and typhoid.
I went to see Innocent yesterday and printed out recent blog posts so he could see your comments wishing him a speedy recovery.
Innocent reading the blog posts yesterday
He is incredibly anxious to get back to work and complete the gorilla census. He really is THE key person to the census, so we need his knowledge. He was talking about how he wants to see Mutazimiza again, as they have only spotted her once. And that they have yet to spot Kangugo in the Kabirizi Family. He is of course in regular contact with Diddy and the rest of the team as news of the gorillas unfolds.

Good news. Thanks for the update.
Innocent, I am very happy to hear that you are recovering very well and are able to be in the comfort of your home surrounded by your family. Sometimes that is the best healer : )
Take it easy as you continue to gain strength!

Great news! Innocent, take it easy and rest up. I’m sure you’re ready to get back to work. Here’s to a speedy recovery.
Good to hear that Innocent is feeling much better. Are the rangers taking any preventive medication against malaria etc?
Pirjo - the Rangers cannot take medicine on a constant or regular basis as it is unadvised to do this as you will cause long term damage to your body. One of the problems with malaria is that once you get it it sort of lies dormant for a long time and flares up from time to time. So it seems to me that the Rangers and other people who live here get malaria quite a lot. Depending on how bad it is and what you can afford, you take some pills or you go and get quinine IV. It is one of the many illnesses here that not only makes people sick, but kills hundreds too.
