More good news before the end of 2008!
We have located and identified each individual in the Mapuwa family - and there are now 14 individuals, up from 12 during the August 2007 census.
Nvuyekure, one of the Silverbacks leading the family - and also Lulengo’s brother.
Interestingly the family is led by 2 Silverbacks (like the Rugendo Family): Mapuwa and Nvuyekure. Then there are 4 adult females: Jicho, Kagofero, Kanepo and Bitangi. There are 2 sub-adults: Mambo and Bikenge, 2 juveniles: Gourba and Sebagabo and finally 4 babies: Subutimbiri, Dunia, Wathaut and Buzara. Wathaut is named after Alexandre Wathaut, the former Director of Virunga National Park and Emmanuel’s predecessor who died of natural causes in June 2008 at the age of 64.
Dunia, one of the babies in the family.
Kanepo - mother of Dunia and Bikenge.
… and finally Mambo!
At the moment Mapuwa and Nvuyekure are interacting every day with each Silverback trying to gain total control of the group. To me it looks like Nvuyekure has the upper hand, because he is younger and fitter than Mapuwa. And here it is all about the survival of the fittest so it will be interesting to see how this family dynamic plays out in coming days and weeks. Watch this space…
