Since we launched the appeal at the end of October 2008 for the Rangers of Virunga we have received almost $60,000 in online donations through this blog from almost 700 individuals. That is an average of $85.70 per donation - donations have ranged from $10 to $5,000.
We already posted on 14 Nov 2008 how Rangers and their families who had been displaced due to the fighting were receiving food thanks to your donations. I also posted a list of donors to date on 14 Dec 2008. So here are some additional receipts that show how donations are being spent. This is not all of the receipts, but a representative sample.
Please remember that 100% of your donation goes to the field (net of a small bank fee) as our administrative costs are covered by a grant from the European Union. We are audited by PriceWaterhouseCoopers 3 times a year.
We should also like to thank the organizations that have supported us during this crisis, either in kind and/or financially: the European Union, the International Gorilla Conservation Program, Wildlife Conservation Society, World Wildlife Fund, The Thin Green Line Foundation, Gearing Up 4 Gorillas, The Murry Foundation, the Zoological Society of London, Frankfurt Zoological Society, Africa Conservation Fund, Happy Hollow Zoo, the Prince Bernhard Nature Fund and our hierarchy at the Congolese Wildlife Authority in Kinshasa.
21 Nov 08 - blankets purchased for displaced Rangers.
6 Nov 2008 - equipment to set up Ranger Refugee Camp in the outskirts of Goma.
Nov 08 - fuel receipts for logistics of setting up camp.
13 Nov 08 - medical treatment for Rangers in Refugee Camp.
26 Nov 08 - renting trucks to move Rangers back to Rumangabo HQ and then from there re-enter the Gorilla Sector.
20 Nov 08 - new tyres for ICCN truck used to transport Rangers to and from park and supplies.
Nov 08 - Pre-paid phone cards then distributed to Rangers so they can communicate with each other during emergencies.
25 Nov 08 - ration sheet for 120 Rangers for 7 days.
7 Nov 08 - Water tanks for Ranger Refugee Camp as it was being set up.
5 Nov 08 - Work done at Ranger Refugee Camp to prevent flooding, and subsequent mosquito infestation that would have caused disease.
And the remaining 4 receipts show how Rangers affected by the fighting in October and November received the salary bonus of $50 each. The total for this particular payment (the total of the 4 sheets) is $6,100.
If you have any questions at all about donations, expenses and receipts please leave a comment here and I will answer you as soon as possible.
Thank you for your ongoing support. It has been absolutely incredible.

Thank you Emmanuel for taking the time to share this detailed report. You’ve made 60K go a long, long ways. If only all recipients of charitable donations were so responsible and forthcoming! I will do my part to keep what I can coming as an individual. I wish you success on all fronts for 2009 with my great admiration for all of you….
I add my thanks to Suzanne’s. I know the expenditures were necessary and justified. I am happy that 100% of the money goes to the field where it is needed. I will continue to support the rangers in any way can and am confident that the funds will used wisely. You are doing a great job Emmanuel and I am grateful you are there. You are all heroes!
Emmanuel, thank you for the report; I am glad I was able to be of help. All the best, Iris
I want to help you in everything you do.
However, I actually want to become a Park Ranger, except I have no idea on how to go about doing it. I realize that military training would be in order, among many other things, and I also have an idea on how dangerous it is. I just need more information.
I don’t know if this is the right place to post this, as I may be ridiculed and ignored. I just want to know the full details on what I would have to do. You have my e-mail, please contact me there.
Hi John. Please email info at gorilla dot cd with your request and you will receive an answer this week. You are not the first to express an interest in becoming a Ranger for ICCN in Virunga. It is however fairly complicated as it is a state institution that for the most part employs Congolese nationals. But please do email and as I said you will get an answer.
