Jean Baptiste Kadega Mwenza is currently the head Ranger at the Gatovu Patrol Post.
Kadega was born and raised in Rumangabo- his dad was a Ranger and he hopes that his 3 sons will follow in his footsteps too. He has worked for years in the Mikeno Sector and used to work as a guide taking tourists up to see the mountain gorillas. This is how he learned his excellent English, as you may have witnessed in the video in which he demonstrates how a snare works.

Kadega was one of the first Rangers who went back into the Mikeno Sector last month. He is trained in using GPS and has been key in identifying the habituated gorillas during the census. His main challenges at his new post in Gatovu will be to combat poaching and illegal farming within the park. And, of course, he will be keeping an eye on the gorillas in that area, including the Solitary Silverback Buhanga.

Hello, Jean-Baptiste, I had already “met” you when I watched that very interesting video about snares. Good luck at your job as Head Ranger at Rumangabo Station! All the best, Iris
Hello Jean-Baptiste. I really enjoyed the video you did explaining how snares work. It definitely added to my “gorilla” education. Thank you! I wish you all the best at your new post. Take care and stay safe.
HI Jean-Baptiste. I wish you much success at the Gatovu post!

Nice to meet you Ranger Jean-Baptiste Kadega. It sounds like you know alot about our Mountain Gorilla friends. : ) One of my friends on facebook posted a comment on a link I shared regarding the Mountain Gorilla’s and she asked these questions:
“their experience is not that different than that of some human’s. what are their coping methods? how do they adapt?”
I thought those were very interesting questions and was wonderfing if you could help me answer them?
Thanks. Lisa
