Maiko died today. Not long after I posted this morning, at 11am local time. Dr Eddy and Faustin were doing their best and had managed to get his temperature back up from 33 degrees to 35.6 degrees but the anemia, dehydration and malnutrition were too much for the little guy.
Dr Eddy will now do an autopsy on Maiko - he also took blood samples that will provide an indication of what was wrong.
Earlier today…
It is utterly depressing to think that Maiko’s family was probably decimated in the wild, just so that he could be trafficked. And now he is dead too. Completely pointless.
Now we need to concentrate on getting the other 3 - Mavivi, Etaito and Udongo - to J.A.C.K. And of course in the longer term the fight against the illegal trade in chimpanzees and other animals has to be tackled with effective law enforcement and education.

Oh, Samantha. I am so sorry to read this news. Please express my sympathy to everyone involved with caring for Maiko. May you receive all the love, courage and funds you need.
Very bad news for Maiko … terrible day for everybody today when we know about his dead …. I can’t find the words….we all are revolted! When will this slaughter end!? … how is it possible that in 2009 such wonderful creatures are being killed in protected areas as I am sure Maïko’s family was slaughtered to get him out of the wild….thanks for all that energy to save him…at least, we will know his story…but how many others like Maïko died on the road, in the trains and/or on airplanes without us knowing about them? …it is high time to stop all that nonsense: let these animals live free in their forests….
Please, help us : Maïko’s story can’t be forgotten! the world must know that such horrible things do unfortunately occur more often than imagined
This is heartbreaking news. I continued to be appalled at the actions of human beings that cause this problem. These precious animals deserve to live in peace with their parents in the forest.I agree with JACK. It is high time for this cruelty to stop!
Thank you all for the tremendous effort you made to get these chimps to a safe place and thank you for your efforts to save little Maiko. I am pleased Faustin will be helping JACK while these babies adjust to their new home. He has a heart of gold and the chimps will settle in nicely with his help and JACK. They will be in a place where they will be loved and well cared for. I only wish Maiko could be with them.
My sympathies to all who cared for Maiko and are hurting at his loss. You will be remembered in my prayers.
This is absolutely devastating. I read the post below earlier this morning and was praying very hard for Maiko’s recovery, as well as for the other beautiful chimps. The fact that these unspeakable, uncomprehensible cruelties exist in the world absolutely slays me. But this kind of act will not stop the fight, it only encourages me to fight harder! We cannot let these beautiful animals die in vain but rather make their voices heard!
May Maiko and all the countless other matyrs find peace in whatever heaven is and know that one day justice will be served.
Yes Sam, heartbreaking and just so utterly pointless. I feel for you all who tried so hard to save him. Was dreading opening the post this morning.
Sam, you and the rest of the team have done everything possible to save the life of this baby. It is the time to focus on the other 3 who will be very lucky to be under the care of J.A.C.K.
My sympathy to everyone who cared Maiko. It’s very sad to know that he has passed away.
Ah, there really are no words to convey the sadness of yet another senseless death…but Roxane is right, we must not forget Maiko, his family or the countless others slaughtered in the name of God knows what. Thank you Sam, Dr. Eddy, and everyone who filled this poor baby’s last hours with a bit of hope and a lot of love.
Im truly sorry to hear this news!
I know the other 3 are in the best hands possible and keep fingers crossed they will make a full recovery
C’est une triste nouvelle que voilà!
C’est révoltant et tellement injuste… il faut que les choses changent… et vite!
Merci à vous pour votre travail, à force de volonté vous changerez les choses… indéniablement!
Bien amicalement!
Thanks everyone for your words… It makes a big difference and I have passed all your well wishes on to Faustin and Thierry. I have just come from where Mavivi, Etaito and Udongo are being cared for and this Monday morning they are doing fine. Mavivi and Udongo have slight colds, but are being treated. Will keep you posted. Thanks again. Sam
[...] and mistreated. The Kivu 3 - and the others at J.A.C.K. - are the lucky ones. Many end up like Maiko. [...]
