The Alexander Abraham Foundation, a US not-for-profit organization, has decided to give 5 Abraham Conservation Awards to Virunga National Park heroes. The awards aim to give recognition to grassroots conservationists who would probably otherwise not be recognized - and are well-known here in DRC.
The awards, that will be given out in an official ceremony on 11 March in Kinshasa, go to:
1. Diddy Mwanaki - who you all know on this blog
2. Innocent Mburanumwe - another very familiar face right here, in charge of Gorilla Monitoring
3. Paulin Ngobobo - the former chief of the southern sector of Virunga who originally started this blog and now works in Salonga park
4. Serge Ukundji, a logistician of the Frankfurt Zoological Society who was a tremendous help to ICCN during the October/November crisis when the Rangers were displaced by the fighting
5. And finally Ranger Kalibumba - the Ranger who was shot and killed at Museya patrol post by a member of the Congolese military in late February 2008. His wife will attend the ceremony.
Congratulations from the Virunga team! And if you would like to read more about the Abraham Foundation please click on the picture link below (you will see Paulin on the home page!).
The Abraham Foundation - and Nancy Abraham - also donated $1,000 through this site last month to help with the crisis in Virunga. Many thanks.

Congratulations. It is heartening to see these true heroes recognized for their work, though I hope they know they are appreciated every day.
I’m very pleased that the Abraham Foundation recognizes the work and dedication of Diddy, Innocent, Paul, Serge and Kalimbumba and will honour them with deserved awards. Samantha, please convey my sympathies to Kalimbumba’s widow for whom the awards ceremony will certainly be a sad moment, and my sincere congratulations to all the others. Iris
Sorry, I misspelled Paulin’ name.

Congratulations to everyone! Well deserved. Can’t wait to see the photos. Special thoughts to Ranger Kalibumbas widow.
Congratulations to all concerned, not just the five worthy recipients but also the rest of the team at Virunga. Grassroots conservation is the key to sustainable development and the Virunga program/philosophy is an outstanding example of best practice. Great to see it recognised as such by the Abraham Foundation.
This is so cool and so very much deserved by the Rangers, who daily put their lives on the line to do their work. Congratulations to all. I’m so happy for you. Great job!
Thanks for all your comments and wishes
[...] Who is making a difference? Though few in number and often far surpassed by rebel fire-power, the park guards often act with amazing courage. Outside of parks sometimes a traditional chief or just an ordinary citizen will make a remarkable difference at a critical point on the map. The Abraham Conservation Award is to celebrate and sometimes commemorate these people and their sacrifice. In Kinshasa, on the 11 March 2009, 16 people from around the country will receive a medal and an award. These people are listed below: [...]
