Yesterday was the inauguration of the Parc National des Virunga primary school at the entrance to Rumangabo HQ. The 7 new classrooms funded by The Murry Foundation at a cost of $77,000 were officially opened - with the presence of Emmanuel, the provincial Environment Minister, Mwami Ndeze (an important local chief), and of course the teachers and kids.
As you can see there was a pretty significant turnout. Emmanuel, the Environment Minister and the Mwami all made speeches. Emmanuel thanked The Murry Foundation for financing the school and Soderu for having built it. The Mwami and the Environment Minister reminded everyone that it was thanks to the gorillas, elephants and buffaloes of Virunga that this new school had been completed, hence making that vital link between conservation and education.
The kids put on a theatre piece - showing gorillas and poachers.
This is one of the poachers!
And just before the cutting of the ribbon the Mwami and Emmanuel set fire to 1,200 rope snares that have been collected by Rangers since 25 November 2008 in the Gorilla Sector during patrols (many made possible by your donations).
Linda Nunn was there - who actually is the link between us and The Murry Foundation in that she introduced us. We really hope Adam Murry will visit us in coming months. Lucy Spelman and the MGVP crew also came along.
Thanks again to those so far who have donated the school benches and desks. They looked very smart and we put 15 in 2 classrooms. All varnished and new!
It was a fabulous day all round - the kids were just amazing and tomorrow I will post a video of them singing the national anthem that is to die for.

Congratulations, Samantha, on the opening of the Parc National des Virunga School! And thank you for the photos of the ceremony: it seems to have been quite a festive occasion. I really like how there always seem to be plays and songs, much joy and humour involved in these special occasions. I’m looking forward to the video of the children. Wonderful job all involved have done! Iris
Congratulations on the opening of the school! What a wonderful occasion after the all the turmoil of the past few years. These beautiful children deserve a nice school and desks to sit at. I wish I had been there to see the theatre piece. I have a feeling it was wonderfully done. Looking forward to hearing the children sing. Well done to all and many thanks to The Murry Foundation for their generosity!
