Ranger Shot & Killed by Mai Mai rebels in the early hours of today

30 Mar 2009 Filed under (Rangers, Threats) by Emmanuel @ 1:15 pm

I have just had a report from Atamato in Mutsora that Ranger Katambiriki, based in the northern sector at Karuruma (20km north of Ishango), has been shot and killed in a Mai Mai rebel attack in the early hours of today. Another Ranger has been injured, and a rebel was also reportedly killed.

This information is hot off the press and Atamato is on his way to see the Rangers and provide support as I write. He will also call me as soon as he gets more information.

Ranger Kambale Katambiriki - photo taken last month

Ranger Katambiriki had been a dedicated Ranger since 1996. He was 32 years old, married to Kabuo Salambongo, and had 7 children - all under the age of 10. The last child, Chawite, was born earlier on this year.

His murder is a tragedy for his family, the park and his fellow Rangers.

As you know this is the 2nd deadly attack this year by Mai Mai rebels. In January Ranger Safari was murdered, and we are continuing with legal proceedings against the alleged perpetrators of this crime. The attacks happened very close to each other - so we feel confident that they are connected.

I will provide you with more info as soon as I get it.

Very sad news indeed. The worst is that we feel totally powerless. While we can help you constructively with your projects, what can we do in cases like this? Financial support for the family will not bring them back ranger Kambale. Are you opening a fund anyway?

This is tragic and sad news. People who devote their lives to “helping” better the good things in life; and have integrity and conviction for LIFE are brutally killed with no regard makes me so incredibly sad. This is a terrible tragedy for this Rangers family How many innocent good people need to suffer under the hand of greed and ignorance.

Which sadness, this news…. Very affected by these évênements I am sad to see that men who want to defend nature and the animals, brave men, are thus assassinated. A thought for its family: Salambongo, and to 7 children to which I address my more sincere condolences.
