Thank you so much for rescuing this little one. The poor thing was just so scared looking out of that bag.
I hope he/she can recover and that the traffickers are prosecuted to the fullest extent.

  2. Francis Francis Says: 29 Apr 2009

Great job on rescuing her, it’s sad that she had to be taken away from her mom and family and she looked so scared. I hope she’s a fighter and realizes she’s now in the best capable hands to help her survive. It’s not the same as being in the wild but Faustin will take good care of her. I agree with Linda and hope you can find the buyers, the only reason these traffickers exist is because there are people out there that are buying these animals. Catch the buyers and the traffickers are no longer in business.

  3. Danny Danny Says: 29 Apr 2009

That is such great news to see the beautiful baby gorilla saved, but so sad to think what the poor thing has gone through and inconceivable that people can support the abduction and trafficking of such human creatures. Please keep us updated on the progress, fingers crossed for a healthy recovery and successful reintegration to the wild sometime soon. Love and prayers for that harmless innocent soul.

the day that rescued the baby gorilla, was the same day of my birthday on April 26. may call it Betty? what you think of this Virginia?

  9. sheryl, washington, dc sheryl, washington, dc Says: 29 Apr 2009

Wow. The temptation to pistol whip that trader must’ve been difficult to resist, especially after seeing the sad condition of the baby.

One minor nitpick - stop calling her or him “it.” That’s for inanimate objects, not babies stolen from their families.

Thanks for all the hard work in moving this investigation to a successful conclusion.

Pierre, the gorilla rescue video is one more proof – as if proof were needed! – of the team’s courage and determination to protect, preserve and rescue Virunga’s wildlife. My most heartfelt congratulations to all. Iris

  11. Iris Iris Says: 30 Apr 2009

Sheryl, I do not believe for a second that any of the team are the kind of person who, although facing real danger every day to be able to rescue and protect Virunga’s wildlife, would ever be tempted to pistol-whip any human being. Actually, I find the very idea offensive. Iris

  12. Amy Amy Says: 30 Apr 2009

What incredible footage. The moment when you first see her eyes looking out of that bag — it sent chillls down my spine.

Well, Iris is it? I’m sorry to have offended your delicate sensibilities when talking about poachers who likely gunned down, or hacked to pieces, this baby gorilla’s family just to steal her and sell her. If you find violence so offensive, may I ask what’s on your dinner plate?

  15. Iris Iris Says: 30 Apr 2009

    Sushi, actually.

  17. Nancy Nancy Says: 1 May 2009

We need more people like you ! I hope that the baby was able to recovered from this traumatic experience.

  18. Elena Valdameri Elena Valdameri Says: 1 May 2009

You should kill the traffickers: Death Penalty for those people that have no respect for those poor animals!

  19. denisa denisa Says: 2 May 2009

I agree with Sheryl. These people do not have soul. What a senseless loss most probable whole family. And baby is orphan for life. Dian Fossey felt same way and if there is not harsh punishment we could see gorillas only in pictures.

  20. JessicaW JessicaW Says: 2 May 2009

Emmanuel, Pierre, Katya and all at gorillacd.org. What a wonderful job you have done. This issue is so complex, especially in an area so poverty stricken, but the way that you have handled it should be an inspiration. To Denisa and Sheryl, what thoughtless comments. No-one for one moment is suggesting that this was not a heinous crime. However, as far as I can tell, gorillacd.org are incredibly conscientious in the manner in which they deal with these crimes. What nonsense to say these poachers have no soul, or deserve a pistol-whipping. For those who truly care about these animals, the balance between the human need in congo and the animal need in congo is incredibly difficult to judge and the guys at gorillacd.org seem to do an incredible job at attempting this balancing act. The briquettes are just a small example of this, as are the way they are educating the school kids. Working out how to save animals in a country with such rampant poverty and violence is never black and white, and knee-jerk comments like this belittle the complexities that the people that try to save these animals have to engage with on a daily basis. A horrific crime indeed, but one that requires an intellectual and carefully though-out response. Thank goodness that Emmanuel, Samantha, Innocent, Diddy, Pierre, Eddy, Katya et al. seem to be doing this. Thanks again for a job done well.

Thanks to all of the rescuers for saving this precious baby girl, and my admiration to the soldiers for their restraint — if I had been there, with a gun in my hands, I don’t think I’d have been able to refrain from shooting the trafficker. (Meanwhile, I agree with others who have said that the prospective buyers are the true villains — how cruel and self-aggrandizing must a rich person be, to want to kill a whole family of these wonderful animals just to kidnap their child to be a sideshow display?)

Please post follow-up information about the baby and how she is doing. Thanks again to all of you, rescuers, vets and everyone, for saving her life.
