The killing of elephants in Virunga over recent years, by both the green-clad soldiers and poachers, had led to a catastrophic decline in numbers throughout the park. You may remember in May last year Emmanuel blogged about the increase in the demand for ivory – which was menacing these majestic creatures.
Now you will be pleased to hear that a very large herd of about 130 elephants is at Kabaraza – in the central sector of the park just south of Lake Edward.
There are another 2 smaller herds there too. They are being followed daily by our Rangers – also of course dressed in green. We think the elephants are coming to realize that Rangers, despite wearing a similar outfit to the military, are not the enemy and are there to ensure their protection.

I think animals have an innate sense of who is a threat to them and they don’t feel threatened by the rangers. I am so happy to hear they have returned. I have no doubt the eles are aware the rangers are friends. Such magnificent animals and so threatened.
Absolutely incredible!!!!!
This is great news, and hope that more are seen soon.
Eddy- great to see so many of these magnificent animals together.
I’m sure they sense who their friends are…
It’s so heartwarming to see these amazing animals returning to the park and being protected by the rangers. There are some civilians in the pictures with rangers. I was just wondering if they haven’t seen elephants for a long time and wanted to see them?
I totally agree Pirjo. Heartwarming indeed. It has a significant impact on the morale of the Rangers too - almost like the fruits of their labor if you see what i mean. And yes, no doubt the civilians wanted to see the elephants. Although Virunga suffers enormously from poaching and other man-made threats, it does not mean that all men pose a threat to Virunga. And many people here love animals for the same reasons we do.
it’s a shame that rangers wear the same colour as poachers/soldiers and that there is no obvious distinction….the elephants may get confused as to who is safe.
I think it is wonderful to feature both the Elephants and the Hippos- such symbols of Africa! Thankyou Rangers for protecting all the wildlife of the Virunga National Park.
I totally see what you mean Betul. Unfortunately the color of the Rangers goes way back and is not something that can be changed easily. We have made the orange logo very distinctive so that from a distance you can tell the difference between the army and the rangers (if you can see the logo of course). Another important change we implemented was changing the color of the vehicles to beige from a military green. This has made a big difference in terms of the population recognizing the Rangers.
Thanks for commenting Samantha. I would like to think as well that the elephants have such an emotional intelligence, they recognise the kindness in the Rangers and can relate to the quiet dignity that they seem to have in them.
