I told you last week that we have another gorilla baby in Mikeno - and I can now confirm it is true!
This is the FIFTH newborn this year! We do not yet know if it is a boy or a girl, but we can confirm that the mother is Maheshe, of the Kabirizi family.
Here are the first pictures…
Martin took these pictures, a Ranger who used to be based at Kibati and is now at Bukima. I think you will agree he is an excellent photographer. The baby was born on 14th November. Read the full story »
Thank you for your donations made from Sat 21st Nov to end of Friday 27th Nov. Here they are, as promised, listed in chronological order.
THANK YOU FOR DONATING TOWARD THE SENKWEKWE CENTRE - THE FUTURE HOME OF NDEZE AND NDAKASI!
This post is from Dr Eddy, the Gorilla Doctor who cares for Ndeze & Ndakasi…
The story started with the gorilla massacres of June and July, 2007. The Kabirizi and Rugendo gorilla groups both lost members. In the Kabirizi gorilla group there was an adult female gorilla with a 2-month old baby. Her name was N’Sekuye, and in June 2007 she was killed by gunshot and her baby was left clinging to her dead body. In the Rugendo gorilla group, 5 of 12 family members were killed by gunshot in July 2007. The dead included the Silverback Senkwekwe and an adult female Safari, who had a 5-month old infant. This infant was also left clinging to her mother’s body. This is how Ndakasi and Ndeze came to be orphans.
Examining Ndakasi in June 2007, just after she was orphaned
This footage was shot by Andre using a small Flip video camera. It is raw footage that Katya has just edited and put together. So you hear all the sounds that Ndeze and Ndakasi hear in Goma - the planes, the banging (from construction) and the music. This is why they desperately need a new home.
The footage is really quite something. Andre has a good eye, and the orphans are clearly incredibly comfortable with him - and each other. Truly Best Friends Forever. Enjoy! Read the full story »
Back in July 2007 I was working in Mutsora, the northern station of Virunga National Park. I remember hearing about the massacre of the Rugendo family of gorillas from Emmanuel. But it wasn’t until I opened an e-mail from an American lady, who broke my heart with her message, that I realized the horror of the what had just happened. She was pregnant just like Mburanumwe, one of the murdered gorillas.
Mburanumwe is buried behind Senkwekwe at Rumangabo - how pertinent that the Senkwekwe Center will be a stone’s throw from the graves.
I am at Rumangabo, the HQ of Virunga National Park, and have just come up from the Senkwekwe Centre which is progressing well - THANKS TO YOUR DONATIONS.
I cannot emphasize enough that we are building brick by brick, by brick, by brick… thanks to you all.
Now I am usually loathe to put photos of myself on this blog - but today I shall make an exception. I really wanted you all to get an idea of the construction, and the size of the bricks. The bricks are made in situ with a machine that we blogged about last week. It is about a dollar a brick…
There you have it…
Would you like to become a Gorilla Godparent to Ndeze or Ndakasi - the ONLY 2 baby orphan mountain gorillas in the world?

This is the menu that Andre and the other carers follow for Ndeze & Ndakasi.
This will of course change when the gorilla girls move into the Senkwekwe Centre - they will have better access to forest food and also as they get older they need less milk, and eventually none.
As promised, here is a list of all the donations made from Monday 16 Nov up to and including Friday 20 Nov. I have put the list in alphabetical order, by first name. This is the same information as that which appears in the sidebar widget as your donation is made to Paypal.
THANK YOU FOR KICKSTARTING THIS CAMPAIGN AND CONTRIBUTING TO THE NEW HOME OF NDEZE & NDAKASI!
