A Gorilla is Born - the 5th of 2009

30 Nov 2009 Filed under (Kabirizi Family, Mountain Gorillas) by Innocent Mburanumwe @ 10:22 am

I told you last week that we have another gorilla baby in Mikeno - and I can now confirm it is true!

This is the FIFTH newborn this year! We do not yet know if it is a boy or a girl, but we can confirm that the mother is Maheshe, of the Kabirizi family.

Here are the first pictures…

Martin took these pictures, a Ranger who used to be based at Kibati and is now at Bukima. I think you will agree he is an excellent photographer. The baby was born on 14th November.

We actually used to think Maheshe was a male - but obviously we were wrong! Maheshe was born on the 19th June 2003, and this is her first baby.

These pictures were difficult to take because Maheshe is very shy. She lost her mother, Furaha, when she was very young, and so can often be found with her brother, Mivumbi.

Let’s hope she stays safe and healthy for her new baby!

Thank you also for all your donations to the Senkwekwe Center - the new home for Ndeze & Ndakasi. It is wonderful to receive this support from all of you. I am very excited about seeing them move to their new home.

Heartwarming pictures of mother and baby. I love hearing a new baby has arrived. How precious each one is. It looks like Maheshe is doing a pretty good job thus far for a first time mother. Looking forward to finding out if Kabirizi has a new son or daughter.

Wonderful photos. She’s just 6 years old too, rather young, so I do hope all goes well for her.You mention Mivumbi being a brother of shy Maheshe…when I looked at the profile “he ” is listed a she ..with a baby of her own!?

Hi Tonia - we are just in the process of changing Maheshe’s profile because the Rangers originally thought that she was a he! Please be patient - this should be done by the end of the day. :)

Hi samantha, yep, I read about the mix up in the text and had got that bit straight.
What I was refering to was that Mivumbi was called a ” brother” to Maheshe (in the text below one of the photos) and when I went to have a look at Mivimbi’s profile I was expecting to find a black back but found that “he” was a she with a baby of her own..lol!
