Baby Gorilla Caught in Snare Dies, Despite Vet Intervention

8 Feb 2010 Filed under (Kabirizi Family, Threats) by Samantha @ 8:19 pm

The baby gorilla injured after being caught in a snare laid by poachers has died. He was Nsekanabo, son of Tumaini and Kabirizi.

I thought I was going to be giving you good news. The Gorilla Doctors Magda and Eddy and the Rangers finally found Nsekanabo yesterday afternoon and performed an urgent intervention. They sedated Tumaini and her baby, and succeeded in removing the rest of the snare from Nsekanabo’s left ankle, in addition to sewing up his face that was so badly damaged.

Drs Magda and Eddy perform the intervention in the forest, in the pouring rain.

Nsekanabo’s face, that was so mangled, is sewn up by Magda. (Photo copyright Gorilla Doctors)

Tumaini and Nsekanabo were still close, as Tumaini was still breast feeding. Nsekanabo was Tumaini’s first known child. Tumaini is also the sister of Ndeze, one of the 2 orphans in the Senkwekwe Centre.

And then this afternoon we have just had reports from Rangers in the field that Nsekanabo is dead.

Tumaini is still carrying him around, so the Rangers will now follow the family closely (maybe for several days), until she leaves Nsekanabo behind. Then the Rangers will recover the body, and the Gorilla Doctors will be able to perform the autopsy.

This is terrible news. Nsekanabo seemed to be doing well after the intervention by the Gorilla Doctors. And now this. Innocent and the Rangers are devastated.

Nsekanabo, 2008-2010. May he rest in peace.

I am so, so very sorry about this. He was beautiful, I won’t go into platitudes, but I’ll just say thank you all for working so hard to save this precious baby, and whichever belief system one has, at the very least we know he’s no longer scared and in pain. Now we have to push even harder to prevent such atrocities from happening again.

I can’t stop crying, He won’t be forgotten.

  2. Alexandra Adams Alexandra Adams Says: 8 Feb 2010

    Such sad news.
You should all remember that by doing what you do, you provide so much for these beautiful animals, you provide only a greater chance of survival, not a guarantee. Do not blame yourselves for you are all too good, too professional, but instead remember you are the special group of people with the strength and skill to attempt an enormous and difficult task.

Do not give up, and one day you will see Tumaini with a new baby to care for.

  3. Denise B Denise B Says: 8 Feb 2010

Had hoped for better, but know your continued work and support is so, so important for the other animals, and for future generations.

I will continue to fund protection of an area from snares, and would suggest others do the same.

  4. Megan Megan Says: 8 Feb 2010

I slept fitfully last night thinking about Nsekanabo and was so happy this morning to know that he had been found and treated. And now this… I am in such shock and can’t stop crying.

As much as I am profoundly outraged, now is not the time. Let us mourn such a sweet, precious baby. Like Christie so eloquently said, he is no longer scared and in pain. May we find some comfort in that. And may we find comfort in knowing he was so loved and cared for by his family — Tumaini, Kabirizi, and the rest of his gorilla group, and the rangers and vets who fought so heroically to save him.

Nsekanabo, you will not be forgotten.

Oh, Samantha! I am so very sad to read this report as I’m sure you were to write it. The trauma of it all was probably too, too much for the youngster. Poor Tumaini! Please thank Innocent, Magda and Eddy for their difficult work and extend my deepest sympathy for the result.

On behalf of Innocent, Diddy, Michel, Sekibibi and all the other Rangers in the Gorilla Sector thank you so much for your kind words. It really is heart breaking to lose one of these precious animals. It is also shocking. You would think in a country where there is so much human suffering that somehow the loss of a gorilla would not be quite so bad, but when animals are as rare as mountain gorillas, each one is precious and it is a big blow that affects everyone involved. Especially of course because the gorilla died from a snare.

Sa maman doit être très triste si elle le garde près d’elle comme cela. Les braconneurs sont vraiemnt sans coeur de blesser ces animaux. De plus ceux -ci ne font pas de mal.

All I’m left with is my deepest appreciation and thanks to Innocent and the vets who attempted for no other reason but human kindness to save what human greed and indifference tried to take away…

A terrible tragedy. Thankyou to the Rangers and the Gorilla Doctors for all that you tried to do to help little Nsekanabo. This situation absolutely enforces why the ‘Protecting The Park’ programme is of such great importance. The more Ranger patrols that we can get into the Park, the more chance of eliminating the snares and poaching activity.

  33. pierrep Pierre Says: 9 Feb 2010

I was dreading when this might happen. Poor Tumaini… When you consider that the Rangers found more than 1,200 snares in the first three months they were back in the Gorilla Sector last year, it is amazing this didn’t happen before. We need to support the Rangers who continue everyday to remove snares, but in the long term there has to be an alterative source of protein for the local population so that there really is no excuse to poach in the forest. P.

  34. Debbie Debbie Says: 9 Feb 2010

My mailbox is full of news about all sorts of cruelty done by mankind against animals across the world: baby gorilla caught in snare, dolphins slaughtered in Japan, orang-outangs slaughtered in Borneo, swedish wolfs killed this winter (although they´re an endangered species in Sweden), dogs and cats being tortured and skinned alive in China, the list of cruelties goes on and on and on… When I read of these horrors my first reaction is disgust and anger, then I feel extremely sad and eventually I just feel powerless. However, after reading the gorilla blog and the heart warming comments made on this website, by good hearted fellow beings, my mood changed to hopefullness - I realised there are so many people across the world who really care about the vulnerable wild life, and together we are strong! That is not just a platitude, it´s a fact.
Although there isn´t much more I as an individual can do for the gorillas (or dolphins or orang-outangs and so on…) than donating small amounts of money as often as I can, I send my prayers to all of You who devote your lifes to saving the endangered species in the Virunga National Park. You make the difference.

The news on Nsekanabo’s death brought back those horrible memories of the gorilla massacre back in 2007. I’m feeling extremely sad at the moment, because little Nsekanabo could have had a good life and now this precious little gorilla is gone forever. I have often asked myself what it is with these mountain gorillas, which makes me feel such strong emotions when something bad happens to them. There are many endangered species in the world, but these mountain gorilla families have a special place in my heart.

The work you are doing in saving so many of these wonderful animals is so important and there aren’t enough words to describe the gratitude I feel for each and every person who is there amongst the gorillas watching over them.

We have to make Virunga Park a safer place for the gorillas and any other animals whose home the park is. Those animals have a right for a safe life.

[...] Barnabe started tracking gorillas in December 1988. He is married and has nine children. Tracking – as you know – is done for several reasons. First of all we need to know where the gorilla families are, and secondly we need to do a visual health check on the gorillas to ensure there are no apparent problems. This is done not only in DR Congo, but also in Rwanda and Uganda, the other two countries that have Mountain Gorillas. Another important reason to track is to remove snares that we find in the forest – they are not necessarily laid for gorillas, but as we know gorillas get caught in them. [...]

Sooooooo sick of this cloying, sickening palaver over gorillas! If they go extinct then they have had their time as we will have ours. How many orgs are now operating? Everyone with his hand out! Enough! The declining number of gorillas will continue to plummet. The Africans will not stop eating and demanding bushmeat! The gorilla areas are swarming with uneducated, miserable people who don’t give a damm about conservation or animal sufferings. I have no hope for the Africans whatever, and still less for wildlife!
