Thank you all for your outpouring of concern. The loss of Nsekanabo was a big blow to all of us working to save Virunga’s mountain gorillas. With only 720 mountain gorillas now left in existence, every unnatural death is both tragic and a setback.
At a time like this, the best thing we all can do is channel despair and outrage into action. Nsekanabo’s death illustrates the need for increased frequency of Ranger patrols to remove deadly snares and arrest poachers. With the park already running on limited resources, however, we need your help.
Please honor Nsekanabo’s life by sponsoring an area of the gorilla sector. If you are already sponsoring an area of the park, I hope you will reach out to your community and family and encourage them to do so as well.
By protecting a 30-acre plot of Virunga’s Gorilla Sector for $25/month you will fund the Rangers to keep this area snare-free.
If we all take on the personal challenge of getting a 30-acre plot sponsored, by ourselves or through others, the chances of losing another critically-endangered mountain gorilla will be greatly diminished.
With gratitude,
Emmanuel de Merode
Director
Virunga National Park

Bonjour mr
I will donate 1000.00 dollars if you can deliver the hand of a poacher to me.I am not joking. And if you really care and I mean really care about the fate of the mountain gorilla as Diane did you would do well to rethink your strategy.
One more cogent point I would like to make is that it is not your job to care about the people of the surrounding villages but it is your responsibility to prevent the extinguishment of the gorillas you profess to care about.Clearly there is a measure of ineptitude afoot.
it is a very fine balance which I think Emmanuel De Merode, all the rangers and the team manage very well under extreme conditions and a very fragile situation. The more the local surroundings are made aware and somehow involved the better they will work towards protecting their heritage.
Emmanuel De Merode, rangers and team you all rock and do such fantastic work…you are all my personal heroes!

The gorillas cannot be taken care of without helping to take care of the people around them. From alternative fuel sources that keep them from making charcoal to an alternative source of protein to prevent poaching. The people of the communities are important too, Mr. Martin, and unless you are in the shoes of these heroic rangers or the warden, I would appreciate you not posting your negative and deragatory comments against them. These men are dedicated to the gorillas, the country, and it’s inhabitants, human and animal and deserve our utmost respect. Thank you all for the job you do! You are heroes!
I am also disgusted by Bruce Martin’s comments and think they should be deleted. What a hide to come on here and denounce the real heroes, those that risk their lives to save these gorillas. Hundreds of rangers have lost their lives protecting the forest, how dare someone come on here and tell them they have a “measure of ineptitude”. I would like to see “Bruce Martin” out there in the Congo forest surrounded by soldiers and poachers and their weapons, I dare say he wouldn’t last long.
The comment about ignoring the surrounding people is one of the most ignorant I’ve ever read. Just proves Bruce Martin’s total ignorance and lack of knowledge of basic modern conservation principals. From experience I know that trolls (in this case ‘bruce martin’) are unworthy of a response - ignore them and they will go away.
Many thanks. Innocent and I are in Bukima. We’ll be posting a strategy tomorrow. Bruce, we don’t do that.
Bruce, you are obviously very frustrated and angry. Anyone that comes onto Gorilla.CD has to be prepared for the good and the bad. How can you judge the Virunga Park team when the DRC has been in near anarchy in recent times? If it was not for these heores who risk their lives every day, then their would be little forest or Mountain Gorillas remaining. All of us around the world can help and I would suggest rather than $1000.00 for the hand of a poacher, that you put that amount in helping to ‘Protect The Park’. There has been enough violence in the Congo without initiating anymore.
Rebeca, no Bruce’s comments should not be censored. The comments may not be valid, but I do understand the helplessness that many people feel worldwide with the internet reporting so much destruction of habitat and wildlife from day to day. It can be overwhelming. I know when I come onto Gorilla.CD or Wildlife Direct that one can be very distressed and one can often feel a great deal of anger at what is happening, but one can ‘HELP” and that is the most important thing to remember.
Well put, Brenton!
it is so good to protect our land and all the animals. the gorillas ca not be protected if there is no help of everyone.
