Forty-six people have been killed in a mudslide at Kibumba, a stone’s throw
from our Gorilla Sector and about 37km north of the town of Goma. The
tragedy hit during the middle of the night, and the mud came crashing
through the forests swallowing up about 230 homes.
Many of the bodies have not been recovered, so graves are now dotted
through the villages
Gearing Up 4 Gorillas – one of Virunga’s key supporters – organized a charity gala this month to raise funds for and awareness of Virunga and its Mountain Gorillas.
G4G, chaired by Linda Nunn, has been a valuable supporter of Virunga for many years
Linda emailed me that “The first ‘Gala’ evening proved a resounding success with around 150 guests enjoying and joining in with the African drumming of Noah Messomo, dancing to the very exotic music of Congolese band Kasai Masai, with Mungo Jerry rounding off the evening entertainment at around 1am.
About 250 elephants have just crossed the Ishasha river (in the east of the park) and entered Virunga from Uganda. This, of course, is good news, but only to the extent that we can protect them.
Elephants in Virunga – a wonderful sight
As of today you can Guard a Gorilla for only $10/month.
Guarding one of the world’s few remaining Mountain Gorillas is a great way to support our field team in their efforts to protect and care for these wonderful animals and their forest habitat, now and in the future.
Guarding a gorilla is a great way to give. Your gift, as well as the knowledge that you intend to keep on giving, will help the field team to plan and work more effectively; and to continue keeping the critically endangered Mountain Gorilla from extinction.

Two buffalo – a female and a male – have been speared and macheted to death near Jomba on the edge of the Gorilla Sector by villagers angry at the animals for eating and destroying their crops.
The dead male buffalo is burned by Rangers to prevent disease from rotting flesh & to prevent anyone eating the animal.
I would like to introduce Rodrigue Mugaruka, our newly appointed Sector Warden for the Rwindi (Central) Sector. He replaces Jobogo Mirindi, who was recently promoted and transferred as Chief Park Warden to Kundelungu National Park in Katanga Province. It’s a big responsibility for Jobogo, in a difficult park. Jobogo did a remarkable job under exceptionally difficult circumstances during his time at Rwindi, including having to evacuate his staff under artillary fire during the October 2008 war. We wish him well in his efforts to bring Kundelungu back to life.
Rodrigue and I a few days ago on patrol on Lake Edward.
Last May Bonane lost a baby – her first born. It was a time of mourning for Humba , the giant Silverback, and his close-knit family. Today, instead of a sad story, we bring you just the opposite. News of another newborn in the Humba family , and Bonane is the mother.
