Forty-six people have been killed in a mudslide at Kibumba, a stone’s throw
from our Gorilla Sector and about 37km north of the town of Goma. The
tragedy hit during the middle of the night, and the mud came crashing
through the forests swallowing up about 230 homes.
Many of the bodies have not been recovered, so graves are now dotted
through the villages
I do not know anyone personally who died, or who is missing, but Jean Bosco
does, as do other Rangers who are from this area.
This gives you an idea of the strength of the mud and water
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the people who have lost loved ones
and their homes.
I cannot remember seeing this kind of phenomenon ever. The experts are
saying that it is because recently we have had a lot of rain. In terms of
the wildlife, the Gorillas and other animals in the park were not affected -
it was mainly the domestic and farm animals outside of the park, like cows
and chickens.

What a tragedy. Best wishes for everyone suffering from this disaster.
Such a sad tragedy. The one place we all feel safe is when we are sleeping soundly during the night.
Please take gentle care of those in the area who survived.
Innocent, I’m so sorry this terrible tragedy had to happen. My thoughts are with those who lost family or friends. Iris
Such a tradegy for Kibumba. The horrors during the night cannot even begin to be imagined. Much strength to those who somehow have to pick up and carry on. Our thoughts are with you all.
