Rangers Wounded in Attack on Lake Edward, 3 Suspects Arrested

6 Mar 2011 Filed under (Patrols, Rangers, Threats) by Emmanuel @ 7:54 pm

I was woken up at 1 am last night with the news that one of our patrol boats on Lake Edward was attacked leaving two wounded.

Illegal boats were detected on Lake Edward by our rangers based in Ishango. A speed boat with a section of rangers tried to intercept the boat. As they approached, Mai Mai militia opened fire on the rangers. They continued with the operation, intercepted the boat, and arrested 3 people and the boat was seized.

One boat hand received a minor wound on the leg, and one ranger was seriously wounded in the attack. Ranger Mayani was hit in the stomach and the bullet is believed to be lodged in his liver. I flew up to Ishango to medivac Mayani to Nyankundi hospital in Beni. I’ve received a report that his condition is stable but they will probably have to operate on him tonight.

We remain optimistic, and are extremely grateful to all of you who helped us obtain the parks aircraft last year which may have saved a ranger’s life today.

merci à tous. This morning Mayani was stable, and the fever that he had developped yesterday has subsided. The surgeons will make a decision this morning on how and when to operate to remove the bullet.

Thanks for this update. We all wish Mayani well. The perseverence and the courage of the rangers are every time again so remarkable, also in this operation!

Let us know how the surgery went, I really hope everything is gonna be ok and that the suspects will be severly punished! I can’t believe how many victims died or were wounded in the last few months!! Is it always like that (I’m a new member) or is it a particular outbreak and if yes why??

  7. emmanuelmfbconnected Emmanuel Says: 7 Mar 2011

Thanks for joining us Leaty. The situation has worsened significantly in the past two months because of a significant increase in the presence of militia groups in the park, mainly coming from the west, where the army has been putting pressure on them. These militias are the FDLR, a Rwandan rebel movement that is blamed for the Rwandan genocide in 1994 and is known to be extremely violent. The militia group that attacked us on Saturday night is the Mai Mai, who are mainly Congolese.

Thank you very much for those explanations. This blog is really great in the way the information comes live and directly from the field! It’s sad to hear that when it’s not one militia, it’s another one…I’ve read before that you wanted to appeal to the UN peace keeping force, I hope they will send some reinforcements and that the situation will get better!! Thanks for this awesome job you are all doing!!
