Today we redeployed in the Gorilla Sector. Â Sekibibi, the acting commander for the Southern Sector of the park took a small patrol to the east of Bukima to carry a reconnaissance. Â The small unit of 5 rangers and 4 community scouts had barely walked more than a kilometre from the patrol post when it fell into an ambush and came under heavy fire. Â They were able to retreat and make their way back to the patrol post, where the rangers are holding out. Â Sekibibi returned to the park headquarters at Rumangabo in the late afternoon.
A section of rangers are camped out at Bukima to try to maintain our presence, but we will no longer be able to do the gorilla monitoring from there, certainly until the area has been cleared of rebel militias. Â We will examine the possibility of basing the gorilla monitoring from Gatovu, a patrol post further west, and somewhat removed from the combat zone.

Thank you so much for the update. Have been checking all day. I am so sorry to hear about the scary complications but am very thankful to hear that everyone was able to retreat safely. Will continue to pray for safety and strength!
Hello Emmanuel and team,
I really admire the courage and dedication of Sekibibi and the rangers; showing presence is important, so as not to leave any room for interpretation; Virunga NP remains Virunga NP, under any circumstance. We will not abandon it. Of course, safety first and I am happy to see a plan B is being set up for them to be in a safer place.
Keep the good work!
Marc
Well put, Marc! Remind everyone there that we’re all pulling for them and the park. And keep reminding us of ways that we can help. Anna

Thank you for all you do for these magnificant animals. Stay safe. Sending all good energy your way.
