Some very good news, the rangers went back in today and were able to relocate the Humba group. We’ve just learned this instant that all 16 members of the group have been positively identified. We’re pleased, because it’s encouraging, but it remains very dangerous work for the rangers, and it may get progressively more dangerous as we start to get closer to the conflict zone. Today we learned that two buffaloes and possibly an elephant were shot and eaten by the armed men fighting around Jomba and Bikenge. This is what puts the gorillas at risk, and what makes it so important that Virunga’s rangers establish and maintain a presence in the area.
I’ve mapped out the approximate distribution of the gorilla families that we monitor. I’ve also included the known rebel positions in red, which are also combat zones. As you can see on the map, the Humba family are probably the easiest to monitor at the moment, although there are armed men moving throughout the area. Rangers have to be incredibly careful not to fall into an ambush, as they did 10 days ago when Sekibibi’s patrol was attacked. Tomorrow, the search will focus on the Kabirizi group, and then Rugendo. The others are the most threatened because they’re at the heart of the combat zone, and we’ll have to make a decision on how to search those areas in the next few weeks.
I wanted to thank you for helping us with the rations for our rangers up at Bukima. Since we launched the campaign last week, 17 of you have kindly covered 42 sets of rations. That’s going to provide our 12 rangers up in Bukima with 882 meals a month (you have to be good at maths here…). We only need 6 more set of rations to keep our rangers in Bukima fed.

That is wonderful, WONDERFUL news!!!! Continuing to pray for the safety of everyone — human, gorilla, and all the other wildlife that inhabit the area. And I’m happy to hear about the success of the ration support. It is truly an honor to help.
