Last night we reached our target to provide monthly patrol rations for our small team of rangers who moved back to Bukima patrol post in the gorilla sector. They have found one gorilla family, Humba, and will continue to monitor them and keep a presence in this area while looking for the others. We would like to thank those of you who stepped forward to make this happen. Feeding our rangers is critical to their work and morale and this important section of rangers is now stabilized and able to monitor some of the gorilla families.
We need to continue with this program of providing rations to each post as they move back in. As you can imagine, the closing of tourism has cut deeply into our finances, and we truly need your help.
Mikeno Sector Patrol Posts: Green is Bukima, Yellow=Gatovo where we plan to begin patrols this week. Posts in Red are not currently active with patrols due to the security situation.
This coming week, we plan to move another team of rangers into the Gatovo patrol post on the western edge of the gorilla sector. They will begin first to search for our largest gorilla family, Kabirizi, who were last seen in this area. We have launched a new campaign to provide this ranger team with monthly patrol rations like the last campaign. If you missed out and would like to help, this is your chance to make a real difference on a regular basis. A monthly donation of $10 will keep one of our rangers fed for one week. Â If 48 people step forward to commit to just $10 monthly, this section of rangers & local trackers will have guaranteed rations. On the box at the top right of this blog, you can choose the monthly amount you would like to give and click Donate.
Silverback Kabirizi, from earlier years, and his family whereabouts are currently unknown.
The Kabirizi family has gone through some major changes in the last few months where the silverback Kabirizi was beginning to lose control and the family appeared to be splitting. We don’t know how this fighting and external trauma may have affected them, but are hopeful that they are safe. We will report on their progress this week.
