Yesterday was very successful, because Romeo’s team managed to locate the small Munyaga family. This is a very unusual family. They’re quite modern. Three adult males living together with one adult female, and a slightly younger female. All three males are silverbacks, and normally they wouldn’t tollerate each other, and we would expect them to fight violently. But these three seem to get on rather well. No fighting, no bickering. We could do worse than to follow their example in this neck of the woods.
All seven members of the Munyaga group have been found, which brings us to 2 of the 6 families located and accounted for. Unfortunately this morning began with heavy bombing, so we were unable to continue the search. But the rangers are remaining on standby at Bukima until it settles down enough. We’ll then have to decide on how to best approach the gorilla families who are right inside the conflict zone. We hope to be able to find the Kabirizi group from Gatovu. Kabirizi is the biggest of all the groups, with 33 members. We’re enormously grateful to those of you who are helping us with the the patrol rations, as it is that support that makes it possible for us to maintain the close protection that we can provide the gorillas, even during these incredibly difficult times.
Again, a few photos of our new found family…
