Kabirizi Family Found! Rugendo Family Still Missing
We have received more good news regarding our mountain gorilla families. Our team of rangers and trackers found 26 members of the Kabirizi family on Wednesday, and yesterday they found the rest – all 33 members!
On Wednesday they also found one of our lone silverbacks, Mukunda, which is a relief as he has not been seen for a long time, even prior to the conflict.
The Kabirizi family, you may remember, has been experiencing personal conflicts. Silverback Kabirizi has been challenged repeatedly by another silverback in the family, Bagheni, who we believe is his son. The family split up and got back together several times, but appears to be together now with Kabirizi still in charge.
There’s no sign of the Rugendo family yet, and the last two families, Mapuwa and Lulengo, are most likely still on the west side where the fighting is taking place.
Thank you all for your support through this difficult period. We hope that the trouble will end soon and our rangers will be able to take up the daily monitoring of the gorillas, but we do not yet see an end in sight.
If you would like to help, we need to raise monthly support for our ranger rations in the gorilla sector. We are doing this one team at a time. The Bukima team is funded now, but we still need help with the next team. Please consider supporting our rangers.

I pray that every gorilla, all the gorilla families, and the rangers are safe and survive through this conflict. I also pray that the fighters do not resort to poaching, murdering, and killing any of the gorillas!!

Wonderful, wonderful news! I am thrilled to hear that the Kabirizi family is safe and that my boy Mukunda is well!
