Protecting the Mountain Gorillas of Virunga

Love is in the Air…

2 Dec 2012 Filed under (Kabirizi Family, Mountain Gorillas, Munyaga Family, Uncategorized) by Emmanuel @ 10:08 pm

We’ve spent the past few months worrying a lot about the gorillas.  For their part, the gorillas have been getting frisky and making babies.

Today was our first day among the mountain gorillas and we’ve discovered four newborn babies,  three in the Kabirizi family and one in the Munyaga family.  We’ve yet to find the other families, but we have reports of another newborn in the Lulengo family.  It’s quite unprecedented, and very encouraging.  Quite extraordinary for the first day of the census.

We wanted to share this with you immediately, but will keep you updated as the census continues over the coming week.

All we have to do is leave them alone and give them space … it is the encroachment that is causing most of the problems. But what a difficult task to ensure that space, this Virunga! Great news!!

Les gorilles ont tout compris, eux: “Faites l’amour, pas la guerre!”
    :-)
Good luck for the rest of the census. Keep it up!

Emmanuel, happy to see you back from Goma, in these wonderful circumstances thereabove! After organising water for the city, really great too.
Though I’m still worried. Is there something usefull left of the parks’ airplain? And the people of Goma: in the news overhere - the last weeks they are reporting! - I saw the rebels departed looting the city. Thereabove many kids seem to be separated from their parents, with fear the rebels take them for soldiers, servants, etc. Do you have any news about [at least one of] these subjects?
Nevertheless: many congratulations for you all with the births! And thank you very much for this really great news and pictures!!!
