As you all know, we moved rangers back to the Gorilla Sector to check on the gorillas for the first time since July – a four month absence from monitoring - and we found a lot of new babies. We began on 1 December with five teams and have found all but one of the habituated families.
We will write a more detailed report soon, but I thought you might like to see some photos of the new babies we’ve discovered in the Lulengo, Munyaga, and Kabirizi families.
We also found that during the absence of rangers, poaching increased to a very large scale: in just 4 days of monitoring and tracking gorillas, 114 snares were dismantled, which are a danger to gorillas and other animals.

Kabirizi, Lulengo, and Menyaga babies are SO PRECIOUS!!!!!
Congratulations to the new babies, mothers, and all family members! Hope babies and moms are Safe, Happy, Healthy, and live LONG LIVES!!!!! Thank you to the rangers for removing the snares and protecting the gorillas. We’re any gorillas hurt from the traps & snares?
Thank you, Warden, for sharing these very special pictures:)
Congratulations. Not only for the babies but also for the pictures.
Would like to ask for a favor. What means “snares”? What is this?
Sasha, we don’t think the gorilla were harmed by the snares, but need to do a full census of individuals, and find Rugendo family, but id looks OK. They are often able to get the snares off if they get caught.
Michael, the snares are traps that the local people set using bamboo and rope to catch small antelope mostly. Unfortunately, the gorillas often get caught and if it’s a baby, sometimes injured or killed. Under normal circumstances, the rangers would be daily looking for snares to dismantle them. Because we have not been able to do this for 4 months, the number of snares they found in just 4 days was a record, I think.
Thanks so much for sharing these wonderful photos, as Anjy says above “radiating hope”.
Great photos! So my hopes and prayers, that the babies will survive and have a way into a good and safe live! Thanks and best wishes to the rangers, which are real heroes!
